Full Paint Commission: Shoretrooper Armor Build

One of our most requested custom commissions: a complete Shoretrooper armor set, 3D printed, sanded, and painted from scratch to finished display piece. This build covers every stage of the process — from raw prints off the bed to a screen-accurate result ready to wear at a convention or display on a shelf.

The Brief

The client wanted a full Shoretrooper — the coastal defender trooper from Rogue One — finished in the iconic dark grey and sand tones of Scarif's garrison. The brief: wearable, durable, and detailed enough to pass close inspection at a fan event.

Stage 1 — Print and Assembly

Every plate was printed in PETG for convention durability. After printing, all parts were cleaned, supports removed, and test-fitted to the client's measurements. The modular chest, back plate, pauldrons, thighs, shins, and gauntlets were all checked against each other before any surface work began.

Stage 2 — Sanding

Surface prep is where the final quality is decided. Each plate went through a progressive sanding sequence — starting at 120 grit to knock down layer lines, moving through 220, 400, and finishing at 600 grit on visible faces. The result was a surface smooth enough for a clean spray primer coat without filler.

Stage 3 — Priming and Base Coat

Two coats of grey automotive primer were applied, revealing any remaining low spots that got a light fill. Once fully cured, the base coat — a dark grey with a subtle warm undertone — was applied in three thin passes for an even, factory-looking foundation.

Stage 4 — Detail Painting and Weathering

Sand tones were hand-brushed into the recesses and panel edges to recreate the coastal dust of Scarif. Subtle black pin-washes deepened the panel lines. A final matte varnish sealed everything and killed any rogue gloss spots from the paint layers.

Result
