Custom Electronics Build: Thermal Detonator with LED and Sound

The Thermal Detonator is one of the most recognizable props in Star Wars — and one of the most satisfying to build with electronics. This commission produced a functional display piece with integrated LED lighting and a sound module triggered by the activation switch.

The Brief

A client wanted a Thermal Detonator for their Mandalorian build — not just a static prop, but one that lights up and makes sound when activated. Convention-safe, of course: no actual explosive content whatsoever. Just the effect.

Print and Assembly

The detonator body was printed in two halves in black PETG, with a channel designed in to accept the electronics package. The activation switch detail on the side was printed separately and houses the actual push-button trigger. A subtle seam line around the equator hides the assembly joint.

Electronics

Inside: a small DFPlayer Mini module loaded with a custom sound clip — the classic activation chirp from the films — a warm amber LED ring behind the top dome diffuser, and a coin cell battery pack accessible via a magnetized panel on the base. When the switch is pressed, the LED pulses three times and the sound plays. Simple, clean, effective.

Result

A Thermal Detonator that earns a genuine reaction every time the switch gets pressed. It clips to a belt with a printed bracket, sits flat against any armor build, and the battery lasts a full convention day on a single charge of coin cells. Princess Leia would approve.
